Publishing Activities of the Krylov Institute

The Transactions of the Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute are published since 1941. By 1975, there have been 285 issues printed. During 1975 ~ 1991, this practice was suspended and staff members published their papers in a periodical also produced by the Krylov Institute. That edition was covering the needs of the entire national shipbuilding industry and was initially titled Shipbuilding Problems (63 issues) later re-named Shipbuilding Industry (24 issues). Those collections of papers consisted of two series: Ship Design and Power Plants. In 1991, the Transactions were resumed, and since then the Krylov Institute already published 13 new issues.

During 1952 to 1966, the Krylov Institute was publishing bulletins about the foreign shipbuilding activities. In 1952~1962 the title was Collected Summaries on Foreign Shipbuilding and in 1966 it was changed for Foreign Shipbuilding. Collected Articles. Altogether, the series numbered 148 issues. During 1950's~1960's the Institute additionally produced some 100 issues of Technical Information, a bulletin of papers in which the staff members reported their research achievements.

In 1959 the Institute started printing large analytical reviews of international publications on naval and commercial ships, offshore structures and marine power plants and produced over 20 such reviews.

In 1992 the Institute launched another regular edition: Digest of Foreign Publications on Navies and Naval Shipbuilding Industries. In 10 years, there were 30 issues of the Digest, and recently they additionally published about 20 analytical reviews on particular naval shipbuilding aspects based on information drawn from the Digest and other sources.

The Krylov Institute also regularly publishes proceedings of conferences and symposia hosted at its premises. For example, during the last 8 years they printed 29 large-format volumes presenting full texts or abstracts of 9 international conferences:

  • Three International Shipbuilding Conferences: ISC 94, ISC 98 and ISC 2002

  • Two Navy and Shipbuilding Nowadays Conferences: NSN 96 and NSN 2001

  • Two Russian Arctic Offshore Conferences: RAO 97 and RAO 99

  • Polar Technology Conference: POLARTEC 96

  • Cold-region Ship and Offshore Conference: Icetech 2000

Since 1990, the Institute organises international transport noise conferences and publishes their proceedings. So far, there were four volumes printed whereas the latest two were released in the electronic format. Besides that, the Krylov Institute published a collection of papers submitted to an industrial science and technology conference on ship theory (2 volumes in 1991) and 6 collections of abstracts of papers presented at all-Russia ship theory conferences Krylov Readings held during 1995 ~ 2001.

In 1999 ~ 2001 the publication list was extended to include abstracts of papers made at V.V.Novozhilov, P.F.Papkovich and Yu.A.Shimanky memorial conferences on ship structural mechanics.

A series of collected articles about major scientists and science managers who have worked at the Krylov Institute was commenced in 1981. By today, the Institute already released such volumes on N.V.Aliakrinsky, G.A.Firsov, A.V.Voznesenky, Yu.V.Krivtsov and V.I.Pershin. A popular science book about Academician A.N.Krylov by Zh.Janovskaja An Academician of Ship Science for young readers was published in 2001.

The Krylov Institute also publishes monographs and collected works of the Institute's staff experts and researchers.
